Ratangad Fort
Introduction
Ratangad Fort is one of the most famous hill forts in the Sahyadri mountain range of Maharashtra, located near Bhandardara in Akole Taluka of Ahilyanagar district. Situated at an elevation of approximately 4,255 feet (1,297 meters) above sea level, the fort is known for its rich history, breathtaking landscapes, ancient caves, and thrilling trekking routes. Ratangad literally means “Jewel Fort,” and it truly shines as a gem of the Western Ghats due to its natural beauty and historical importance.
The fort is believed to be around 400 years old and was captured by the great Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj during his military campaigns in the Sahyadri region. Ratangad served as a strategic watchtower because of its commanding view over the surrounding valleys, trade routes, and nearby forts.

1. Needle Hole / Nedhe
The most iconic attraction of Ratangad is the naturally formed rock cavity called the “Nedhe” or Needle Hole. This giant hole in the mountain wall offers spectacular panoramic views of the Sahyadri ranges and valleys. During sunrise and sunset, the scenery becomes especially mesmerizing.
2. Amruteshwar Temple
