Bhandardara Dam
Overview
Bhandardara Dam, officially known as Wilson Dam, is one of the oldest and most scenic dams in Maharashtra. It is situated on the Pravara River in the Sahyadri ranges of the Western Ghats near the village of Bhandardara in Akole Tehsil, Ahilyanagar District. Surrounded by lush green mountains, waterfalls, forests, and lakes, Bhandardara is a popular destination for nature lovers, trekkers, campers, photographers, and weekend tourists.
The dam creates the beautiful Arthur Lake, which offers breathtaking views throughout the year, especially during the monsoon and post-monsoon seasons. History
Wilson Dam was constructed in 1910 during British rule and is one of the earliest masonry dams in India. The dam was built across the Pravara River for irrigation and water supply purposes. The reservoir formed by the dam is known as Arthur Lake, named after Arthur Hill, a British officer.
